Octavo orange cloth gilt (tips worn/rubbed and somewhat marked) All Edges Gilt xvi +350pp +catalalogue leaf. Inner hinge pulled but not split to scrim inner hinge. Name to upper margin of title - H.J. Whitefield. Scattered pale foxing and one gathering slightly proud. Rear endpaper has a small scrape but original binder's ticket for Burn and Co to pastedown. *A popular juvenile book dedicated to Kingsley's son it went on to be published by others including Macmillan, Dent, Dutton and Strahan and is still in print today. A Readable popular first book on geology, evolution and natural history. Considering its great popularity the first printings are not that easy to come by.
