Description
Quarto red cloth with grey boards lettered with onlay (bit marked/lower cover with a monogram in a childish hand/edges worn especially corners) 23 pages + [1]p printer's colophon. edges finger soiled, 5 leaves with a small red ink mark to fore-edge and one leaf with a tear, without loss. Thus not a good copy but complete and a scarce book. Inscription to "Grace Winifred Britton, Christmas 1907". *Actually a rather unsettling book as though the idea of Dutch wooden dolls as children's material had many precedents these stories are rather different, the children are troublesome, the lovers do not end happily, the brave soldier ends up without legs, the twins in the car have an accident, rebellious Jane is whipped "most severely" and the black Sambo doll has his face scrubbed but "his smile alone came off".
