250x180mm brown cloth spined pictorial boards (edges worn to all three sides) Titlepage +40pp +8pp Cassell catalogue. The 40 pages are double folded & conjoint at the fore-edge except for the titlepage and the blank leaf at the end which are single leave. THIS IS AS ISSUED however many copies were immediately slit apart which is NOT how they should be. In this copy the page numbered 1)=the preface) and its conjoint, page 2, were slit along the fore-edge thus opening the fold. There are some grubby marks and two openings are sl.foxed and 3 pages have clean tears, all without loss. Contemporary inscription in handsome calligraphy at top margin of titlepage "Xmas 1887 Clifford with Papa and Mama's love". Eendpapers have LL and lion monogram as designed by Walter Crane. A charming book by a foremost Victorian art nouveau illustrator.
