Description Duodecimo (14x9cm) marbled paper boards, red roan spine with title gilt (covers worn, tips bumped, spine repaired with most of old leather relaid, name M. Brown to free endpaper). Frontis + vi +162[of 192]pp. Pages bit browned with some light marks of former damp, pp.11-12 lower corner torn off with loss of text, LACKS final 30 pages (5 gatherings). *Defective and damaged copy of a rare early Christmas book for children, with nice engraved frontis illustration, and dedication dated Dec 25, 1804 to "Miss Eliza Phillips, a young Lady, who on this Day, completes her 7th Year, with Wit and Beauty sufficient for Seventeen". A note then follows: "N.B. The Editor, as a suitable Encouragement to his young Readers to exert their Skill in solving the Enigmas and Problems in this Work, recommends that the Mince Pies, in all regular Families, shall be divided in the Proportion of the Number of Solutions made by the several Candidates". The identity of The Editor as Eliza's father Richard is firmly established by the matching registration of her birth in PRO RG4/4661 (Eliza daughter of Richard Phillips and Elizabeth Griffiths, born St Paul's Churchyard 25 Decr. 1797 - photocopy laid in). See also DNB article on Sir Richard Phillips, bookseller & author (1767-1840), and Osborne Vol 1 p223, Vol 2 p850 (1807/1805 editions) which do not identify the editor/author of this delightful children's book (Gumuchian 4045).
