165x95mm tan marbled leather with red spine title label (corners worn/hinges rubbed & head and foot of spine chipped) 262pp. A bright crisp pretty little edition with no loose or torn pages in a handsome binding. Gumuchian 3909 for 2nd edition (ours has the second edition engraved pictorial titlepage bound before the printed title). *Jean de La Bruyère, author of Les Caractères, ou, Les moeurs de ce siècle, was "l'estimable auteur qui m'a fourni l'idée et le plan de cet ouvrage" (author's preface p.[ix]). Each chapter tells a tale that describes points of bad behaviour such as vanity, envy, ostentation and also the good traits such as kindness, modesty, politness. In all there are 30 chapters.
