He dressed sometimes as a lady and other times as a man presumably this was useful for his life as a spy. He served in the French Army in 1761-2, became charge d'affaires in London in April 1763, and then plenipotentiary minister. When the new ambassador from France arrived in London d'Eon was demoted and suffering under this he wrote this book spilling some of the secrets of his spying but keeping others in reserve as "insurance". After this publication he was not able to return to France and lived most of the rest of his life in England.
