Duodecimo contemporary calf with key-pattern blind tooling, 5 raised bands red gilt title label (tips worn, front board starting to split at spine but held by cords) 191pp. Endpapers and first two or three and last pages heavily spotted, else only occasional foxing. Some pencil marginalia, name D. Poole on margin of titlepage & 1913 gift inscription on its back. *Translation of an influential Italian work on criminology (Dei delitti e delle pene) by the Marquis Cesare Bonesana-Beccaria, a talented jurist considered to be one of the greatest thinkers of the Age of Enlightenment. This work (originally published 1764) opposes the use of torture and the death penalty, and is said to have had a profound influence on the Founding Fathers of the United States (Wikipedia).
