The 4 parts are unrelated essays the most important of which is "Clidophorus", the 1st published work on the esoteric/exoteric distinction. Here Toland offers important suggestions on how to read an esoteric text, throwing light on deistic and atheistic writers such as himself, who were forced to disguise their true meaning in order to evade persecution for blasphemy. Also of interest is the essay on the early female philosopher, Hypatia, and Toland's defence of his "Nazarenus".
