Octavo brown buckram gilt titled to spine (rubbed/tips sl.worn) (14 of 16 ie lacks license leaf before TP) +983pp+(1p)+(40p=index)+(1p) (recte 981pp as mispaginated leaving out 177/8 as always.) Front end-papers with notes, corner loss to titlepage just affecting one corner of the double rules enclosing the page. Has double sword coat of arm to TP & advert leaf at the end of the preliminaries with a catalogue leaf of publisher's offerings. Marginal tear out of 163/4 without touching text & last index leaf with tear but no loss and repair on blank verso. Name Tho. Smalbroke above the errata that finishes the index. Five or six leaves with marginal notes in red in same hand as EP notes (WING n2023). A neat tight copy by Rous, an Oxford scholar and puritan he sat for Devon in the Long Parliament, the Barebones Parliament and adherred to Cromwell. Starting out as a Presbyterian at about the time he was writing this book, which is a compilation from the church fathers, he became interested in a scheme for a state church on Congregational lines. He bacame Speaker in the Little Parliament and held many important positions under Cromwell, dying before the Restoration.
