Description
Two Volumes in One: bound with A FURTHER JUSTIFICATION OF THE PRESENT WAR .. Small quarto contemporary calf with red spine label raised bands (neatly rebacked/ tips slightly worn) all edges blue. Armorial bookplate Ilchester. Collation: (8)+80, (24)+80 +79-86 +57-136pp (ie. recte 168pp). First volume came out anonymously in the previous year, the FURTHER JUSTIFICATION is here in a first edition but it was soon reprinted with through pagination as a Single two-part volume. There is a plate list in volume 2 but none in volume 1. The missing plates are tipped in in good facsimiles. Some damp staining but mainly marginal with Preliminaries and first 2 leaves and last 6 or 7 leaves most affected. *A vehemently anti-Dutch volume written in Answer to "Considerations upon the Present State of the United Netherlands". The author includes illustrations of the tortures that the Dutch were supposed to have perpetrated. Yet war was unpopular with the British who sympathized with the Protestant Dutch and not with the allied Catholic French, who, like the English king were out to destroy a rival naval and trading nation. Stubbe's hatred was irrationally venemous but his discussion of principles of international law are interesting but become more one sided when referring to the trade with the Indies and Dutch interests in America. A strange mixture of typography, black letter, italic and capitals as well as side notes referring to Sodom and Gomora, the Bible, Socrates, etc in Greek, Latin, French and English (WING S6046, S6051).
