195x120mm (in 4's) original sugar paper wrappers bound into half blue roan spine gilt titled (old auction ticket removal stain/tips worn). Uncut edges with some dusting 378pp end of 1st volume (all published at this time) but tipped to rear inner side of sugar paper covers "To the Public The sale of this work being so very extensive, occasions the Publisher to acquaint the Reader, that one Number of Vol.II of the Sufferings of John Wilkes Esq. will be regularly published every other Day." Three library catalogue entries of the 2 volume set mention a folding portrait but it is not clear whether this was issued with this first volume. This is the Clement K Shorter copy with his handsome art nouveau bookplate with the Walter Crane monogram. Shorter (1857-1926) a book collector and editor of the Illustrated London News and several other journals was also founder The Sketch (1893), The Sphere (1900), and The Tatler (1903).
