Octavo brown library buckram spine gilt titled with library and shelf mark (hinge starting to split/ink mark to cover but binding secure) XII + 175pp +folding diagram. The half title with gift inscription to Literary & Philosophical Society by N. Bennett "as a small remembrance of his friend Capt. Johnson .. 1854" Society stamp to verso of the map & titlepage, recto of the half title + six circular marginal stamps to text page margins. *The introduction of more iron into shipbuilding caused variations in the magnetic compass used for positioning. This was an early solution to the problem.
