Description
Large octavo (in 4's) half black roan spine gilt ruled with title & Vol. I in gilt (head of spine repaired, foot of spine split to hinge, edges worn). Inscription on free endpaper "W. Drape, Saint Vincent 1837", pencil note on page iii "William Coombe, author of the 'Devil upon two sticks in England' &c. He died in London June 1823 aged 83". Frontis + pictorial title + iii +[1]p Advertisement to the Ninth Edtion +276pp +[1]p plate list +[3]pp blank +[4]pp Prospectus for Johnny Quae Genus & Ackermann book list. Collated complete with all plates as listed. Some off-setting from plates to opposite page, some staining, foxing and 3 tears repaired with paper to edges, one small corner missing, 2 plates with letters written in sky portion of etching. Colour marks in margin of two plates. The plates are well coloured and not smudged. *Complete copy of this first volume in the amusing and delightfully illustrated Syntax series, but condition only Fair.
