Three Volumes large octavo, entirely uncut/untrimmed in original blue sugar paper (wrappers bit frayed to top/bottom of spine, spines tanned, vols 2-3 with damp tide mark to foot of covers). Vol.I 205pp (inc. titlepage), Vol.II 266pp (inc. title), Vol.III [8] +326pp (includes index). *Travels and negotiations undertaken by Cardinal Pacca on behalf of Pope Pius VII with documents retaing to history of the Vatican's relations with France during the Napoleonic wars. Pius VII was present at Napoleon's coronation as Emperor of the French in 1804, but in 1809 Napoleon invaded the Papal States, resulting in his excommunication. The Pope was taken prisoner and transported to France. He remained there until 1814 when, after the French were defeated, he returned to Rome, where he was greeted as a hero and defender of the faith.
