Folio (270x168mm) in 4's (except Ee & Hhh in 6's), handsome half calf on 6 raised bands, spine gilt ruled with decorative gilt red title label, marbled paper sides, All edges sprinkled red. Portrait frontis + titlepage within double ruled border +430pp +[2]pp colophon between decorated rules. Collated complete (variant with a marginal note on page 41). Blank recto of portrait has ink spots and lower corner browned, Strathallan names with show-through to top margin above portrait and MS note of author's name "Doctor Balcanquell". Ownership Willm. Crawford to top of title. Some fingering to margins of 1st 6 and last 3 leaves, with old date calculations below colophon and soiling to its back, text pages otherwise clean and crisp throughout. New front & rear laid endpapers - a good restoration with resewing. Text in italic and Roman fonts with generous margins. *Royalist proclamation and political account of events in Scotland, which eventually led to the English Civil War (STC 2nd ed. 21906).
