Description
Folio in 6's (325x215mm) contemporary leather binding with spine on 5 raised cords, rebacked and corners repaired in matching leather, Doncaster Library bookplates on pastedowns (ex dono William Chadwick, Arksey 1889). Titlepage + dedication leaf to Queen Elizabeth (signed Henricus Savile) + 520 leaves, inc. separate titlepages dated 1596 (in elaborate engraved surrounds dated 1574) for each of 4 sections: 1. William of Malmesbury and 2. Henry of Huntingdon (from earliest times to accession of Henry II), 3. Roger of Hoveden (up to year 1201) and 4. the chronicles of Ethelwerd and Ingulph of Croyland, with anonymous continuations up to year 1486; finally [30] leaves of chronological Tables (59 AD to 1066) entitled "Fasti Regum et Episcoporum Angliae usque ad Willielmum Seniorem". *A valued collection and Editio Princeps of all the English historical chronicles included. This first printing, despite rather thin laid paper, is the prefered edition. Savile was one of the main compilers of the King James Bible, and endowed Oxford Savilian chairs of Astronomy and Geometry (STC 2nd ed. 21783).
