Octavo newer full calf 4 raised bands red spine label spine gilt to bands & compartments, covers blind ruled & corner tooled. Half-TP +Frontis +TP +(x =dedic.& To the reader+Poem) +311pp +(8p=epitaphs & contents) +(Xi)=bookseller's list. The first few gatherings have been archivally repaired to the upper gutter corner where there was some marginal damage not affecting the text. The first 5 leaves have also been strengthened or repaired along the gutter again with no loss of print. Else a very clean, crisp handsome copy. *A defence of Charles that was earlier included in the "Works of King Charles the Martyr" attributed to Charles but actually written by various royalists. This is the first separate edition. The often clandestine circulation of these works as well as the poor behaviour of the Parliamentary troops gradually swung the English people to a royalist revival (WING P1601).
