Description
Duodecimo contemporary roan panelled and decorated in blind on 4 raised bands with spine label (spine with leather deficient at head & foot hinges split but holding by cords/tips worn). Titlepage with woodcut fruit ornament + ad Lectorem leaf + 234pp [*2+a-K12 (K10-12=blanks)] pp92,194 mis-numbered 90,294. Name to titlepage "Will Evelyn" different name to foot of end-paper (upside down) some pages unopened & still partly uncut and joined. *The purpose of this first (Latin) edition (WING M2128) is explained in the title of the English translation published in 1682: "Miltons republican-letters: or a collection of such as were written by command of the late Commonwealth of England from the year 1648 to the year 1659 originally writ by the learned John Milton, secretary to those times; and now translated into English by a wel-wisher of England's honour". Scarce.
