Description
Octavo 18th century calf on 5 raised bands with gilt arms on both covers (Society of Writers to the Signet) tips and edges rubbed, joints cracked but held by cords. Old shelf mark label and modern name label (John Lawson) on pastedown, name stamp Sir Richard Betenson Bart at head of titlepage, licence page and title browned at edges, [8] +168pp. *Holder, a clergyman and early member of the Royal Society, here explains the mechanics of articulation. In the preface he notes that he was motivated "by a Worthy Design of giving Relief to a Deaf and Dumb Person, in the year 1659". He uses oral & written signs and applies a manual alphabet together with lip-reading (Wing H2386, Krivatsy 5935). Scarce.
