134x78mm near contemporary cald gilt ruled with red spine label gilt (rubbed and faded, tips edges worn, boards coming loose but lightly attached). Marbled endpapers, [24]pp (frontis, titlepage, Dramatis Personae, dedications, Prologus Prior 8 March 1614, Posterior 6 May 1615) +154pp inc. Epilogus +[3]pp blank. Neat red ink inscription on FEP R.H.B. Bolton [Trinity College Cambridge] 1883. Light stain of former damp (30x8mm) in top margin of 1st 12 leaves, text otherwise fairly clean throughout but pp 1-20 closely cropped. *Partly based on Giambattista Porta's La Trappolaria from Plautus' comedy Pseudolus. Ruggle, a tutor at Clare College Cambridge, satirised the quarrel of precedence between the Mayor of the town and the Chancellor of the University, using facetious Law-Latin. First performed in 1614 for King James I's visit to Cambridge, the King so enjoyed it that he came to a second one on May 6th 1615a few months later. But lawyers in London didn't appreciate the satire and wrote refutations of what they considered calumnies. When Ruggles died in 1622 he left instructions to burn his papers, but several MS versions were circulating, so in 1630 the play was first published, with many mistakes. It was reprinted more correctly in the 2nd (STC 21446), then this 4th came out in 1659 shortly before Restoration of the Monarchy, and reprinted as here in 1668-70 (printer's full name from Wing R2215).
