Description
Octavo panelled calf in three-toned brown roan (old reback, tips bumped, edges worn). Frontis portrait + titlepage +[10pp prelims +[12]pp contents for both parts +17-405pp + [3]pp publisher's book list. Title for Part II at p187. Pages lightly browned but clean & crisp with hardly any signs of use and no markings or ownership. *Ray was a Fellow of the Royal Society and this is probaly his most influential book, going through successive reprints every 2-3 years. First published in 1691 it influenced succeeding generations of naturalists. It was even plagarised by Paley in his "Natural Theology" and according to Charles Raven (Regius Prof of Divinity Cambridge) "more than any other single book it initiated the true adventure of modern science, and is the ancestor of the Origin of Species and l'Evolution Creatrice" (ESTC T93667).
